Obama & Copus - September 22, 2008

Instruments of Change!!!

COPUS is proud to be performing at the fundraiser for Presidential Candidate Barack Obama scheduled for Sunday, October 5th, 2008, in Vallejo from 5-8pm. The performance is free and takes place at 187 ‘C’ Street.

The event is organized by the Grass Roots Bay Terrace Friends of Obama/Biden. http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gsxrwl

COPUS is an acronym for ‘Creation Of Peace Under Stars’. Formed by well-known poet/spoken word artist Royal Kent and ASCAP award-winning composer/pianist Wendy Loomis in 1998, COPUS is a world rhythm jazz band that presents powerful lyrics, beautiful melodies, and messages of hope and change to the conscious listener.

The San Francisco-based ensemble has just returned from a successful performance at the Sweet Auburn Springfest event in Atlanta where the group performed to thousands of eager listeners on May 9 and May 10. The 21-year-old annual event draws 350,000 to 500,000 fans. Other noted artists who have performed at Sweet Auburn include Grammy Winners Usher, India Arie, and Outkast. Auburn Avenue is a dynamic civil rights locale that has been graced by Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., Andrew Young, Jimmy Carter, and many other visionaries who have left their marks upon us all. “COPUS was honored to perform at this historical event,” says Royal Kent.

In addition to Kent and Loomis, the ensemble includes the talents of flutist Monica Williams, bass player Patrick Mahon, drummer Greg McRay, and percussionist Santie Huckaby. COPUS has recorded two CDs; developed an independent label; appeared on webcasts, TV, and radio; established 11 websites; and performed at clubs, theatres, festivals, and galleries throughout the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Nashville, and Atlanta. Adamant about bringing a positive message into this troubled world, the group discovered that they are not alone.

Said one fan, "COPUS is not a band - it's a movement!"

"COPUS is a musical group with some of the most talented musicians that I have yet come across. The music is a mixture of spoken word, jazz, a touch of blues, and a hint of classical styles...the music that is created is absolutely masterful.” (Michael Allison, Associate Writer, MusicDish.com)

The next COPUS event is a fundraiser for Phillips Temple in Berkeley on Saturday, October 25th, 2008.

New Copus Music Release by PHOENIX RISING! - August 7, 2008

As many of you know, PHOENIX RISING is comprised of composer/pianist Wendy Loomis and flutist Monica Williams. In addition to being performers with COPUS and being members of the ever-expanding Copus Music roster of recording artists, they are gaining attention via their live performances and their myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/bayareacontemporarymusic . Many people have written wonderful comments about the music; here are my top 10 favorites ...

"I wish the real world could be as peaceful as your music"

"Very smooth and relaxing organic sound that motivates me to play
more music"

"BLISS! Honoured to receive your invitation. I just listened to all 3 tracks and would've stood up clapping and cheering, laughing and crying had I been there. I dunno. This myspace is full of the most extraordinary brilliance..."

"Your music has cleansed me at the beginning of a hectic day"

"How can you reduce yourselves to an opening act? You are the MAIN
ACT!"

"The piano is like a waterfall sometimes. I loved Debussy when I was little."

"I think it's time to take over the world with a Beauty Suite!"

"Your engaging and evocative music vibrates our boat and fires up our
synapses. It compelled us to look out to sea and realise there are no
limited dimensions."

"The moving pathos in 'Improv for Film' drives me to a sacred state"

"You are adding so much light to the planet with your music"

Reggae Rising Festival!!! Get Psyched!!! - May 19, 2008

[Humboldt County, CA May 15th 2008] Reggae Rising Music Festival is proud to announce additional artists' confirmations, plus the return of the High Altitude Dance Club, Upgraded VIP Lounge, the South Beach Dome, and a very special guest Sirius Satellite Radio’s Pat McKay – Reggae Rhythms.

Reggae Rising Music Festival is THE summer festival to "Get Psyched For" and will take place on August 1st, 2nd, 3rd at the Dimmick Ranch and French’s Camp, situated along the picturesque Eel River in Piercy, California and will feature three days of camping and great reggae music from world renowned reggae artists.

"I love the name Reggae Rising. It invokes a vision of reggae music soaring to the heavens, an appropriate place for the King's music." Diane "Livonne" Adam - Beat Magazine

This world renowned bend in the river, on the Mendocino / Humboldt County line, is the perfect backdrop to showcase this year’s lineup, which is unparalleled, and we're proud to announce these latest additions to the 2008 Reggae Rising Music Festival:

• SIZZLA - His popularity within the music industry has grown so rapidly in the last few years that he is considered to be a musical phenomenon. He is at the forefront of Jamaica’s revival of conscious dancehall, which takes dancehall back to its musical and spiritual influence of roots reggae. His music has set the reggae world on fire with number one hits that include: "Like mountain", "Babylon cowboy" and "Kings of the earth" for Fatis' Xterminator label, "Clean up your heart" on Barry O'Hare's Xrated imprint and many others. His rare live appearances are always sold out.

• COLLIE BUDDZ and the New Kingston Band – A wicked voice, killer riddims and a mad-sick flow, Bermudian reggae artist Collie Buddz self titled debut album proves he’s a solidly talented artist with a rock-solid foundation in reggae and the talent to connect ghetto reality with the highest heights of human aspiration. Born in New Orleans and raised in Bermuda, Buddz creates island sounds that blend hip-hop and soca beats over confessional first-person lyrics.

• MR. VEGAS - In August 2007, Mr. Vegas released his latest album Hot It Up, distributed by Delicious Vinyl/Fontana in the USA, Five Man Army in Japan and Cargo throughout selected countries in Europe. The critically acclaimed effort includes the fiery tracks “Tek Wey Yuhself,” “Lean Wid It,” “Nuh Friend From Dem,” “Hot Wuk” and many more. For Dancehall artist Mr. Vegas, every day provides new opportunities. As entertaining the massive with quality Reggae music is his passion, Mr. Vegas will continue to be a dominant force in the music industry.

Other artists include: Grammy Award winners UB40, Beres Hammond, Sly and Robbie, Junior Reid, Don Carlos, and Julian Marley. Plus Tanya Stephens, Gentleman, Cham, Turbulance, Medicine Drum with Greg Ellis and Rara Avis, Clinton Ferron and the Boogie Brown Band, Blue King Brown, Rebelution, Natural Vibrations, Soul Majestic, Reggae Angels, Jade Steel & Emerald Triangle, Lion Camp Showcase featuring Ishi Dube and Jah Sun, Opening Ceremonies, and some very special Musical Photo Tributes to our brothers Lucky Dube, Joseph Hill and Mikey Dread. Please check our website frequently as there are more acts TBA.
Our newly redesigned and upgraded VIP Lounge will feature shaded seating plus an expansive grassy area with river views, live video feed from the stage on 3 large viewing screens, daily happy hour featuring complimentary appetizers, wine tasting and champagne. For more information please visit our website at www.reggaerising.com or call the Reggae Rising hotline at 707-923-4583.
We're excited to bring back The South Beach Dome. After the main stage is closed, the South Beach Dome marches on till morning, featuring DJ's and Special Guest MC's, a favorite for those looking to keep the music going all night long.
